Meet the Chefs: Janette Feniak and Reina Todd It started with a friendship begun two decades ago. Reina Choudhury-Todd, from England and Bangladesh, and Janette Feniak who hailed from Holland, chanced to meet through their sons. That encounter has culminated in Van Gali’s Café, a name they chose to reflect their international heritage, and international Mom-style meals. Housed in their renovated circa 1880s stone building, Van Gali‘s reflects their friendship in its warm, relaxing ambience, its walls showcasing the black and white photography of a local artist.
This dynamic duo is a demonstration of multi-tasking at its best. Reina takes massive, freshly baked, five-inch cookies out of the oven, while Janette rings up a bill. As Janette turns to a catering order, Reina prepares their signature Van Gali’s Panini with tuna, olives and feta on rosemary focaccia, provided this day by a German bakery in the area. They prepare meals the way their Moms would—using fresh ingredients and a willingness to experiment with tastes and textures. The menu offers homemade goodness from vegan to special diets, and everything in between. Made-daily soups are gluten and dairy-free, and can be taken home to enjoy; salads are a testament to freshness. In the summer, it can all be experienced outdoors on their patio, enclosed by a stone wall on one side, and a living fence of glorious trumpet vines on the other. Ideal for friends. Van Gali's Inn Our historic home c1878 has been tastefully transformed into two room, each with their own ensuite, fireplace, TV, air conditioning, and twin or king beds, conveniently located downtown.
